Invitation to a specific spiritual discipline:
I invite you as disciples/students of Jesus to take some time this week, to meditate on these words of the Scriptures. Perhaps the following would be a helpful method:
Read the Text for the Week at the beginning of each day:
O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! (Isaiah 64:1-2)
Reflect on what the text means for you between the events of your day.
Pray this week:
Dear God, as this Advent season begins, I consider the times and moments spent in waiting to see the power of your presence coming into my life and the life of the world: There may be the times when I have been lonely and afraid. There are the days I contemplate the violence and the tragedies your people live through, where children have not found safety. Be with us, God of healing. Tear open the heavens and come to us! Bring us to the vision and the reality of your kingdom come, where lion and lamb – where all live together experiencing your peace.
As we remember this week the lighting of the first Advent candle, we pray with the hope and the joy which comes when your light burns within us. And so with the light of your Spirit, I/we ask your ear in listening to the prayers that are on my/our heart(s)…[include praise and thanks to God, intercessions for others, confession for personal sin, requests for personal needs].
We also continue to pray as your communion of saints on earth for ourselves, the church and our world…[include here our community’s prayers for the week listed on the left, as well as anything else that the Spirit gives you to pray].
In Jesus’ name I/we pray. Amen.
